El Calafate lies in the Southwestern tip of Patagonia close to the Chilean border. The little village is located on the banks of the gigantic lake ArgentinoThis lake is nothing more than the bedding of what was once an enormous glacier covering the whole region. Today there are still remainders of this prehistoric glacier and some of them advance up to 30 cm a day. All of them will eventually end their downhill race in the Lago Argentino, which gives us the opportunity to get close to these floating wonders of nature during our excursions. This visit confronts us directly with today’s climate issues. El Calafate has a steppe climate with cool to hot and dry summers and cool to very cold winters with very little precipitation throughout the year. Temperatures can reach -5C during winter.
Montevideo is the Capital of Uruguay, political and economic center of the country and administrative headquarters of MERCOSUR.
Montevideo, where almost 300 years of history are throbbing, from the colonial era to the city of the 21st century. Their memories, music, aromas, architecture, different cultural expressions and their cosmopolitan tradition are reflected in a sky populated by colors that dialogue with the water that bathes its coast and its bay.
Manaus, Amazonas, is situated at the confluence of the Negro and Amazon rivers. The city was founded in 1669 as the Fort of São José do Rio Negro. It was elevated to a statute of town in 1832 with the name of “Manaus”, means “mother of the gods” in tribute to the indigenous nation of Manaós. Manaus was especially active during the rubber boom in the late 19th century. Afterwards it somehow lost the interest of the general public until the Zona Franca was created and tourism started to flourish. Today Manaus is a modern city with an important industry and virtual no access by road. Manaus therefore thanks it existence to the mighty Amazon River.
